Finding engaging, failure-free activities for seniors in memory care can sometimes be a challenge. The Bubble Wrap Sheep is a wonderful mixed-media, tactile art project that uses everyday household items to create a textured, 3D picture of a sheep standing in a field. This craft is perfect for those with limited abilities because it focuses on sensory engagement and simple steps, ensuring a beautiful result every time.

Materials Needed for the Craft

You likely already have most of these supplies on hand, making this a quick and inexpensive activity to set up.

•Pink construction paper or cardstock for the background
•A piece of bubble wrap, pre-cut into a scalloped “cloud” or oval shape
•White paint for the sheep’s wool
•Green paint for the grass
•A paintbrush
•A standard metal kitchen fork
•Black paper, pre-cut into one sheep head/face and two rectangular legs
•Two googly eyes
•Glue stick or liquid glue

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1.Position the Body

Place the pre-cut bubble wrap shape onto the center of the pink background paper, ensuring the bumpy side is facing up.

2. Paint the Wool:

Using the paintbrush and white paint, coat the entire surface of the bubble wrap. The paint will catch on the raised bubbles, creating a wonderful textured, wooly look.

3. Add the Face:

While the white paint is still wet, place the black paper sheep head near the top center of the bubble wrap. The wet paint will act as an adhesive.

4. Add the Eyes:

Attach the two googly eyes to the black sheep face.

5. Attach the Legs:

Take the two black rectangular paper strips and tuck them slightly under the bottom edge of the bubble wrap to serve as the sheep’s legs.

6. Stamp the Grass:

Dip the back of the fork tines into the green paint. Press the fork repeatedly along the bottom edge of the pink paper, overlapping the stamps slightly, to create the appearance of blades of grass. Allow the artwork to dry.

Benefits for Memory Care

This specific craft is highly adaptable and offers numerous therapeutic benefits for individuals in memory care or those with physical limitations.

Feeling the bumpy bubble wrap, the smooth paper, and the wet paint engages the sense of touch. Sensory stimulation is known to reduce anxiety and agitation in memory care patients. The stark contrast of the black face against the white wool and the bright pink background makes the image easy to process for aging eyes or those with visual impairments.

Because the shapes can be pre-cut by a caregiver, the participant does not need the fine motor dexterity required to use scissors. Painting the bubble wrap does not require precision; in fact, a messy, dabbing motion works best. Similarly, stamping with a fork is much easier for someone with tremors or arthritis than trying to paint individual blades of grass with a fine brush.

Creating an animal can spark reminiscence therapy. Caregivers can use the craft to prompt conversations about growing up on a farm, favorite pets, springtime, or visiting petting zoos. Most importantly, the end result will look like a sheep regardless of the participant’s artistic skill level. This fosters a sense of accomplishment, boosts self-esteem, and encourages future participation in activities.
