As an activity coordinator in aged care, I see firsthand the little things that bring joy to our residents, whether it’s a new craft, a simple game, or something useful they can make and cherish. Recently, I designed a DIY eyeglass case made from a humble pot holder. At first, it may seem simple, but the joy this small project can bring is remarkable.

The beauty of this activity lies in its simplicity. By using materials most of us have at home—a pot holder, a bit of thread, and maybe a button—this project is inexpensive and easy to organize.

As aged care workers, we’re always on the lookout for activities that are engaging yet simple enough for everyone to enjoy without frustration. This eyeglass case activity is perfect, as it gives each participant a chance to craft something truly useful without a complicated process.

    Materials Needed

Gather these essential materials for your eyeglass case craft! You can find these at the corners of your house, facility, or any local supermarket near your area. You will only need:

    1. Pot Holder
    2. Needle and Thread
    3. Glue Stick and Glue Gun
    4. Clips
    5. Buttons
    6. Old Jewellery items

    Crafting the DIY Eyeglass Case

Follow along as we give you the step-by-step process on how to create your own Eyeglass case out of pot holders. Make sure to pay attention and remember the important parts!

    1. Fold the Pot Holder. Fold the pot holder in half so that the inside (soft side) will be the interior of the case. Use clips to secure the fold. Make sure to evenly fold the pot in half to avoid imbalances in your finished product later on.

    2. Stitch the Sides. Sew the folded pot along the edges. Leave the folded edge and the opening of our eyeglass case unstitched. If stitching is a little dangerous for your beloved seniors, you can use hot glue as a replacement.

    3. Decorating the Case. It’s time to let your seniors’ creativity take over the craft! Ready the materials and get started. Glue buttons, old jewelry, or any decoration you want for the craft.

    4. Check the finished product. Get your eyeglasses and try to put it in your DIY Eyeglass Case! Let seniors showcase their finished product by having a mini-exhibit or a quick photoshoot to commemorate their simple but elegant artwork.
