    Golden Years Gazette, 1960–1969

Hand someone a newspaper and the room changes. People reach for their glasses, someone reads a headline out loud, and before long someone says, “I remember that.”

Volume 2 brings you twelve more pages of Australia in the sixties. Every story is new, with nothing repeated from Volume 1. Each one is written in the present tense, as if it’s just happened, so residents can read it the way they first heard the news.

The headlines are large, the text is easy to read, and the photos are black and white, just like the papers we grew up with.

How to use it in your sessions

Reading aloud. Choose one story and read it slowly to the group. Stop after the headline and ask who remembers it. You don’t have to finish the article. If the conversation takes off, let it.

Small groups. Give each table a copy and a page. The sport pages and the ads usually get people talking first.

One-on-one. Sit side by side and go through it together. Let the person choose the page. Some people will read, some will point at the photos, and some will just listen. All of that counts.

Family visits. Leave a copy in the room. It gives visitors something easy to talk about, and grandchildren often love hearing about the drive-in or the change to decimal currency.

On a projector or big screen. Some of our members tell us this works really well with a group. Open the PDF, put one page up on the screen, and read it aloud while everyone follows along. The headlines and photos are big enough for the whole room to see, and nobody has to hold a sheet.

A few questions to start with
    • Where were you when the Moon walk was on TV?
    • Do you remember the jingle for the new money, or learning dollars and cents for the first time?
    • Did you ever go to the drive-in? What did you take with you?
    • Who in your family was a Skippy fan?
    • Did you have a Hills Hoist in the backyard?
    • Which footy team did you follow?

There are no wrong answers. If someone doesn’t remember a story, move on to the next page or simply enjoy the photos together.

    Print tip

For the best newspaper feel, print it on A2. It’s big enough for a group to gather round and read together. A3 also works well, printed double-sided and folded. If you only have A4, choose “fit to page” when you print. The text stays readable, and single pages are easier for some residents to hold.

    Pairs with Volume 1

Volume 1 covers the Beatles tour, Harold Holt, the Voyager disaster, the first heart transplant, Dawn Fraser, Lionel Rose, the Wave Hill walk-off, the Melbourne Cup, the Vietnam protests and the 1962 Perth Commonwealth Games. Use both volumes together and you have a full decade of stories for your sessions.
