This gentle Dolly Parton activity brings together colour, fabric, simple craft, and a story with real heart behind it. Residents create their own patchwork coat using the included outline and a choice of bright paper or light fabric patches. You can keep it as a quiet craft table, or begin with the short Coat of Many Colours Story Companion and let the activity open the door to relaxed conversation about sewing, clothes, favourite colours, and the things people once made or cared for at home.

The Story Behind Dolly’s Coat of Many Colours

All Print-out Materials Included

Dolly Parton’s song Coat of Many Colors was inspired by a coat her mother made for her from donated rags and fabric scraps when Dolly was a child. While she sewed, Dolly’s mother told her the Bible story of Joseph and his coat of many colours. To Dolly, the finished coat was special because it had been made with love and care not because it was expensive.

That is what gives this craft its extra depth. We are not trying to copy Dolly’s coat exactly. We are making colourful patchwork coats inspired by a story about creativity, care, and the small things that can feel special because of the person who made or gave them.

Everything You Need to Run This Activity

Premium Members can download the complete Coat of Many Colours Printable Pack shown above. It includes the large A4 coat outline, ready-to-print patchwork paper pages, the Song Story & Summary handout, and gentle discussion questions to help you introduce the activity with confidence.

Print the provided pages, add a few light fabric scraps from your craft pile if you like, set out the glue, and you are ready to begin.

What You Will Need

A4 Coat Outline: Print one large coat template for each resident from our included PDF. Use regular A4 paper, or light cardstock for a sturdier base.

Included Patchwork Paper Pages: Print the patterned paper pages in colour. Cut or tear them into generous squares, rectangles, and strips—around 4–6 cm is a good size for easy handling.

Light Fabric Scraps: Put out a small basket of clean, lightweight fabric scraps, such as cotton, calico, gingham, floral fabric, or soft patterned material. Pre-cut larger pieces from a scrap-fabric pile so residents can choose, feel, and glue them onto their coat. Avoid thick or heavy fabric.
