This vibrant and engaging Rainbow Serpent craft is a wonderful way to celebrate NAIDOC Week or any Indigenous-themed event in aged care. It’s a collaborative project that brings residents together to create a single, impressive masterpiece that reflects the spirit of storytelling and community.
Residents love the shared experience of this activity, the bold use of color, and seeing their individual contributions form part of a larger story for the facility to display.

What You’ll Need
This craft uses simple, sensory-friendly materials:
- Long butcher’s paper or A3 sheets taped together (black paper also works beautifully for making colors pop)
- Thick black markers or Sharpies
- Acrylic paints (traditional tones: red, yellow, white, blue, green)
- Cotton tips (perfect for traditional-style dot painting)
- Sponges and paintbrushes
- Coloured paper scraps (for collage elements)
- Optional: Glitter glue, sequins, or buttons for added texture
- Glue sticks and aprons

Setting Up the Craft Table
I recommend setting up a long table where everyone can sit comfortably. Spread out the various materials—paints, cotton tips, and collage items—so they are within easy reach.
Place the long “serpent base” in the center of the table. Having a few images of Indigenous dot art or Rainbow Serpent stories on the table can provide great visual inspiration for the residents as they work.

This is a different variation to how the activity can be done. Black paper with white outline.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prepare the Base
Before the session begins, pre-draw a long, winding snake shape across the full length of the paper. Make the body thick and bold to allow plenty of space for decorating.
Alternatively, you can draw individual body segments onto separate A3 or A4 sheets for residents to decorate individually before assembling the snake together.

2. Divide into Sections
Draw light lines across the serpent’s body to create “panels” or sections. This is the secret to a successful collaborative project! Each resident is assigned their own section to decorate. This encourages a sense of ownership, reduces “blank page” overwhelm, and ensures everyone has their own space to be creative.

3. Decorate and Personalize
Invite residents to fill their section using various techniques. There is no need to copy traditional designs exactly; the focus is on color and pattern.
- Dot Painting: Use cotton tips to create rhythmic dot patterns.
- Collage: Glue paper scraps or buttons for a 3D effect.
- Sponge Stamping: Use sponges to create textured backgrounds.
- Symbols: Encourage higher-functioning residents to paint symbols that represent water, tracks, or family.

Gentle Discussion Prompts While Crafting
- “Do you remember learning about Dreaming stories at school or in books?”
- “Have you ever seen Aboriginal dot art before?”
- “What colors remind you most of the Australian outback?”
- “What kind of stories or fables do you remember from your childhood?”
Display Idea
Once dry, hang the serpent in a prominent area like the reception or the main dining hall. Facilities love having something large and visual for families and visitors to see!

Why Residents Love This Activity
This craft is a favorite for several reasons:
- Inclusivity: It is easily adapted for mixed cognitive abilities and limited mobility.
- Low Pressure: Because it’s a group effort, there’s no pressure for one person to make a “perfect” piece of art.
- Gentle Education: It opens a relaxed space to talk about Indigenous storytelling, creation, and the importance of water and life in Dreaming stories.
- Visual Pride: Seeing a large-scale piece of art hanging in the facility gives residents a great sense of accomplishment.
