Crafting Your Score Box – Turning Plywood or Cardboard into Fun!
If you have a handy partner or a DIY enthusiast among the residents, crafting your score box can be a delightful project. From plywood to cardboard boxes, the possibilities are as varied as the game outcomes. With a bit of creativity, you can transform simple materials into a golfing or bowling adventure. Don’t worry; even if you’re not too handy with tools, the joy of crafting in this activity is all about the process and the shared laughter it brings.
Below are some examples of a Golf and Bowling Scoring box you can copy for your own game.
Bob’s Bowls & DIY Golf Game Essentials:
- Balls – small balls like golf or tennis balls that will fit into the goal holes. (minimum 6)
- Whiteboard – to write down scores
- Goal – Like the ones shown below. Can be made from a cardboard box or wood.
- Lightweight Putting clubs (for the golf version)

How to Play Bowls & DIY Golf Game:
- Position the Box: Place the score box close to a wide wall. If a ball goes astray, the wall will stop it from rolling too far.

- Seat the Players: Seat all players on chairs on either side of the score box in a line so everyone can watch the action.
- Mark the Line: Place a masking tape line on the floor up to 3 metres from the scoring box. This is the line to bowl or putt from.

- Determine Teams: The game can be played in two teams or as individual scorers. The highest scorer of the day is the winner.
- Take Turns: Each player putts or bowls the balls towards the goal. The aim is to land balls in the highest-numbered holes to maximise their score.

- Track Scores: Use the whiteboard to record scores after each round.
- Play Multiple Rounds: Have a few rounds if time permits and add all scores together at the end.

- Award Prizes: Give a small prize or certificate to the top-scoring bowler or golfer and the runner-up on the day.
Accessibility Tip
This game can also be played in a fully seated position. Simply have a chair available at the throwing line for residents who prefer to remain seated.
