As an experienced aged care coordinator, I’ve found this simple autumn umbrella craft to be ideal for residents living with Alzheimer’s and those in memory care. Using folded colored paper to form a triangle-shaped umbrella, participants can draw the handle, collect real leaves from the garden, and glue them onto their card to create a bright seasonal display. This calming hands-on activity supports fine motor skills, sensory engagement, and provides a gentle way for residents with Alzheimer’s to connect with nature and express creativity.

    Materials You’ll Need

    • Coloured paper (for the umbrellas)
    • Glue stick
    • White or coloured bond paper (for the background)
    • Pencil or marker (to draw umbrella handles)
    • Clay dots (for raindrops)
    • leaves (for autumn theme)

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    Step 1: Fold the Paper

Give each resident a piece of coloured paper. Fold it back and forth in a continuous fan-like motion until the whole paper is folded.

Step 2: Fold and Glue the Umbrella

Fold the fan in half, then glue the ends together to create a small umbrella shape. Let it dry for a minute or two.

Step 3: Glue to the Canvas

Attach the folded umbrella to a sheet of paper or card. Draw a curved handle beneath it using a pencil or marker.
