This straw painting flower bouquet craft is a joyful and accessible activity that residents in memory care or living with Alzheimer’s really enjoy. Using everyday items like plastic straws, paint, and paper, residents can stamp and press vibrant petals to create beautiful, textured flowers. Once their artwork dries, they can add stems, leaves, and cheerful touches like ribbons to complete the bouquet.

It’s a calming, sensory-rich activity that nurtures focus, fine motor skills, and self-expression — helping residents relax, connect, and take pride in their creativity in a warm, supportive environment.

    Materials You’ll Need

    • Plastic straws
    • Paint (various colours)
    • Paper or cardstock (for painting on)
    • Small decorations (ribbons, stickers, or paper bows)

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    Step 1: Prepare the Straw

Give each resident a plastic straw. Cut small slits around one end and gently spread the edges — this will become the “petal” shape for printing.

    Step 2: Dip and Paint

Dip the cut end into paint and press it gently onto paper. Each press forms a flower. Residents can try different colours to build a bright bouquet of blooms.

Step 3: Paint the Centers & Add Stems and Leaves

Add a small circle of yellow paint in the middle of each flower to complete the petals. Then Using green paint or markers, draw stems and a few leaves connecting the flowers.

    Step 4: Decorate the Bouquet

Finish by gluing or drawing a ribbon around the stems to make it look like a bouquet. Encourage residents to add stickers or extra touches for fun.

    Benefits for Seniors

This straw painting activity supports hand coordination, creativity, and sensory engagement. The repetitive dipping and pressing motion is gentle and enjoyable for all ability levels. It’s a soothing, colourful craft that brings smiles and a sense of accomplishment to your residents.
