An uplifting and inclusive activity for seniors that celebrates style, fun, and community spirit.

Why a Fashion Show Works So Well in Aged Care

As an activity coordinator, I’ve found that fashion-themed days can bring out smiles, laughter, and a strong sense of involvement among residents – especially when everyone has a chance to take part in their own way. Whether it’s dressing up, cheering on others, or simply enjoying the show with a cup of tea, this event can bring joy to all.

Step 1: Partner with a Local Op Shop or Charity Store

Reach out to your local op shop or goodwill store and ask them to support the event by supplying quality clothing, hats, shoes, coats, and accessories. Most are more than happy to get involved—especially if proceeds from the day can be donated back to them.

Tip: Ask if they can select outfits ahead of time and perhaps donate an item or two for a raffle prize.

Step 2: Recruit Your Fabulous Models

Invite interested residents, staff, family members, and volunteers to take part in the fashion parade. Encourage both men and women to participate—walkers and wheelchairs are welcome on the “runway”! For those who may not want to model, involve them in dressing others, doing makeup, or cheering loudly from the audience.

Step 3: Set the Stage for the Show

Transform your common area into a fashion runway experience.

  • Set tables in a U-shape or around the perimeter of the room so models can walk through the space.
  • Decorate the tables with lace cloths, fresh flowers, and vintage teacups for a charming afternoon tea setting.
  • A microphone and MC are essential! Choose someone with a warm, cheeky personality who can describe outfits and keep the mood light and engaging.

Step 4: Prepare a Dressing Room Area

Set up a quiet room adjacent to the main area where models can change outfits, freshen up, and get makeup done. Include full-length mirrors, good lighting, and a few volunteers or staff to help.

This room can also double as a space for residents who want to try on outfits for purchase.

Step 5: Host the Show with Applause and Flair

Let the show begin! As the MC announces each model, encourage applause, cheers, and photo taking. You can play upbeat background music to keep energy levels high. Don’t forget to include fun props—like parasols, fans, or feather boas—to add a little extra flair to the runway.

This is a beautiful opportunity to highlight each resident’s individuality and allow them to shine.

Residents shine on the runway at Regents Park Boca Raton, with a lively MC bringing energy and charm to the fashion show.

Step 6: Offer Clothing for Sale and Raffle Prizes

After the show, residents and visitors can browse and purchase any outfits or accessories worn in the show. All proceeds can go to the supporting op shop, which not only adds meaning to the event but encourages their ongoing support.

For a bit of extra fun, host a small raffle using donated items from the store or local businesses.

Step 7: Include Everyone – Even from the Sidelines

Even those unable to walk the runway can still participate. Residents in bed or those with limited mobility can still wear something special—like a hat or scarf—and be “paraded” by a staff member or family member. Acknowledge everyone with claps and smiles—it’s all about inclusion.

Optional Extras

  • Photo shoot booth: Set up a corner with props and a nice backdrop where residents can pose for fun photos.
  • Craft activity: Get residents involved in making brooches or decorating hats leading up to the event.
  • Meal-time protectors workshop: Inspired by initiatives like Our Timeless Threads, teach residents how to sew stylish and dignified clothing protectors using scrap fabric.

For more event inspiration, many of these ideas can be adapted for themed celebrations like International Women’s Day in Aged Care or Melbourne Cup Day, where dressing up is part of the fun.

Final Thoughts from an Aged Care Coordinator

This type of activity lifts spirits and offers meaningful engagement without relying on memory. It’s about the now—the smile on someone’s face when they try on a bright jacket or hear their name called out as they strut down the “runway.” With a little planning and teamwork, your Fashion Show Day can become one of the most delightful and empowering events of the year.
