Being an aged care coordinator veteran for over 10 years, Iโ€™ve observed countless seniors enjoy themselves as they experienced artistic focused aged care activities. Perhaps one of the most, if not the most trendy and popular craft that we have done is the Faux Stained Glass. This hands-on activity is a wonderful way to combine creativity, fine motor skills, and a touch of nostalgia, making it perfect for stimulating minds and lifting spirits.

Reasons Why Faux Stained Glass Rocks!

Let me share with you why faux stained glass has been such a popular go-to for an engaging aged care activity.

Sensory Stimulation

The vibrant colors and textures can be incredibly stimulating for the senses. I have observed how the bright, cheerful hues and the tactile experience of working with different materials can both stimulate the creativity of seniors. Not only that, the activity also offers a sense of relaxation.

Cognitive Engagement

The process of planning the design, and following the steps require seniors to be mentally focused. This creative craft keeps the mind sharp! I remember a senior, who always looked forward to our faux stained glass crafts, saying how much she enjoyed the challenge of coming up with new designs each sessions.

Fine Motor Skills

Activities like cutting and pasting are excellent for maintaining dexterity. One of our residents who had been struggling with arthritis, observed that these simple movements helped him with light movement exercises and brought him a sense of accomplishment.

Social Interaction

Group activities almost always promote conversation among residents. Our art room would buzz with small talk and laughter as residents shared stories and complemented each otherโ€™s work. Itโ€™s heartwarming to see bonds being formed over shared creative experiences.

Sense of Accomplishment

Creating a beautiful piece of art boosts self-esteem. Iโ€™ll never forget the look of pride on the residentsโ€™ faces when they saw their finished piece hanging in the sunlit window. It was an amazing moment to watch!

Step-by-Step Guide

Plan the Design

Allow your seniors to start by choosing a simple design. Geometric shapes like squares, rectangles, or triangles work well. Draw your design on the black construction paper. One of our residents, I noticed that most of my residents always liked to draw intricate patterns, which added a unique flair to their projects.

Outline the Design

Outline the glass with the chosen design. Make sure to assist your seniors as they go through this process. I remember helping a resident cutline her design to her glass, and how weโ€™d chat about her favorite childhood memories.

Prepare different colors of glass paint and glue for the faux stained glass. Allow your seniors to use their favorite colors, and assist them to mix and match the paint and the glue with their designs to unfold a unique artwork.

Outline the Art with Colored Glue

Once the seniors’ are contented with their desired designs. It’s time to outline the art with colored glue. We used black colored glue in our aged care activity by improvising and adding black ink to a glue bottle. You can adopt the strategy or buy ready-to-go black glue!

Use Aluminum Foil for a Glittering Effect

Get some aluminum foil from your kitchen and distribute it to your seniors for some shiny glittering effect. This will serve as the finishing touch for your faux stained glass craft! Carefully crumple a piece of aluminum foil then place it at the back of the glass paint!
