Rainbow Serpent Craft for Seniors

What You’ll Need

This craft uses simple, sensory-friendly materials:

• Long butcher’s paper or A3 sheets taped together (black paper also works beautifully for making colors pop)
• Thick black markers or Sharpies
• Acrylic paints (traditional tones: red, yellow, white, blue, green)
• Cotton tips (perfect for traditional-style dot painting)
• Sponges and paintbrushes
• Coloured paper scraps (for collage elements)
• Optional: Glitter glue, sequins, or buttons for added texture
• Glue sticks and aprons

Setting Up the Craft Table

I recommend setting up a long table where everyone can sit comfortably. Spread out the various materials—paints, cotton tips, and collage items—so they are within easy reach.

Place the long “serpent base” in the center of the table. Having a few images of Indigenous dot art or Rainbow Serpent stories on the table can provide great visual inspiration for the residents as they work.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare the Base

Before the session begins, pre-draw a long, winding snake shape across the full length of the paper. Make the body thick and bold to allow plenty of space for decorating.

Alternatively, you can draw individual body segments onto separate A3 or A4 sheets for residents to decorate individually before assembling the snake together.

2. Divide into Sections

Draw light lines across the serpent’s body to create “panels” or sections. This is the secret to a successful collaborative project! Each resident is assigned their own section to decorate. This encourages a sense of ownership, reduces “blank page” overwhelm, and ensures everyone has their own space to be creative.

3. Decorate and Personalize

Invite residents to fill their section using various techniques. There is no need to copy traditional designs exactly; the focus is on color and pattern.

• Dot Painting: Use cotton tips to create rhythmic dot patterns.
• Collage: Glue paper scraps or buttons for a 3D effect.
• Sponge Stamping: Use sponges to create textured backgrounds.
• Symbols: Encourage higher-functioning residents to paint symbols that represent water, tracks, or family.
