Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls on the third Monday in January — 19 January when the calendar lands that way — and it is a gentle day for hope, kindness and “what matters to me.” In aged care you don’t need a history lecture. A short story, a quiet song, and a craft that lets every resident name a dream of their own is enough.

This session is an “I Have a Dream” cloud mobile. Each resident gets one large cloud printed with “I have a dream…” plus their name, and three smaller clouds hanging below it: for my community!, for my country! and for the world! — each with a hope they choose. When you hang them together, the lounge or corridor fills with soft white clouds of kindness.

The steps below follow our free printable template and are written for an aged-care craft table — staff pre-cut where needed, residents decorate and decide the words, and a carer or caregiver acts as scribe when handwriting is hard. Pair it with our free Martin Luther King Jr. Quiz for a full afternoon.

    Why this activity works well

    • Calm, meaningful, and low-pressure: There is no “right” answer for a dream.
    • Works for global groups: Kindness, family, community and hope travel everywhere.
    • Easy to adapt: Pre-cut clouds, staff scribes, stickers instead of scissors.
    • Creates a shared display: Finished mobiles look lovely hanging in a lounge or corridor.
    • Gentle conversation: No deep political knowledge required.
    • Flexible group size: Works 1:1 or at a small table of 4–8.

A short note on the day

Dr Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered for speaking up for fairness, dignity and peace. His most famous speech is often called the “I Have a Dream” speech — a vision of people living with kindness and equal respect. At the craft table, that idea becomes personal and local: What do I hope for — for my community, my country, and the world? Keep any history to one or two warm sentences, then move to the clouds. Residents who lived through the 1960s may have memories of the news; others will simply enjoy naming a hope.

💡 Debbie’s tip: Put on a soft playlist — hymns, folk songs, or quiet instrumentals. If your group knows We Shall Overcome or similar peace songs, one verse before you start sets a lovely tone. Keep volume low so people can still chat.

    What you’ll need

    • Printed cloud templates on card stock, A4 or US letter (8½ × 11 in) — one large cloud and three small clouds per resident (see free PDF below)
    • Markers, crayons or coloured pencils
    • Scissors (staff use for anyone who finds cutting hard)
    • Hole punch
    • Ribbon or yarn — about 25 cm (10 in) per strand; three strands per mobile
    • Optional: glitter glue (staff-managed) for a soft sparkle around the edges
    • Optional: Blu-Tack, tape or extra string to hang the finished mobiles

💡 Debbie’s tip: Print on card stock, not plain paper — once the small clouds are hanging, thin paper goes floppy. Pre-cut a few sets the day before for anyone with shaky hands or arthritis, so the session stays about choosing words and decorating.

    Step by step

    1. Print the cloud pages. Print the cloud template on card stock, A4 or US letter (8½ × 11 in). Plain paper gets floppy once the clouds are hanging.

    2. Name the big cloud. Each resident writes their name on the large cloud (alongside “I have a dream…”). If writing is tricky, a carer or caregiver can write it while they watch.

    3. Fill the little clouds with dreams. On each of the three smaller clouds, write one hope: one for the community, one for the country and one for the world. Asking “What would you wish for your grandchildren?” often gets the ideas flowing.

    4. Add some colour. Decorate with crayons, markers or coloured pencils. A touch of glitter glue around the edges adds sparkle and keeps the words easy to read.

    5. Cut them out. Cut around each cloud. Keep a few pre-cut for anyone with shaky hands or arthritis.

    6. Punch the holes. Punch three holes along the bottom of the big cloud and one at the top of each small cloud. The small circles on the template show where they go.

    7. Tie on the yarn. Thread a piece of ribbon or yarn about 25 cm (10 in) long through each hole in the big cloud and knot it.

    8. Hang the small clouds. Tie a small cloud to the loose end of each piece so the three dreams hang below the name. Then put it up for everyone to enjoy.

    Making it easier for everyone

    • Limited hand strength / arthritis: Pre-cut every cloud and punch the holes ahead of time. Offer thick markers instead of fine pencils. Staff tie the yarn; residents choose the words and add colour.
    • Dementia-friendly: Show one finished sample first. Offer 2–3 written prompt hopes to choose from (“friendship”, “kindness”, “peace”) rather than an open question. Staff scribe. One hope per small cloud is enough — skip glitter if it distracts.
    • Staff as scribes: Many residents light up when someone writes their words. Read the line back: “I’ve written: for my community — more friendship — is that right?”
    • Low vision: Large print, thick dark markers on white card, high contrast. Read each hanging cloud aloud as you put the mobile up.
    • Short session: Pre-cut and pre-punch. Session = name, choose three hopes, decorate, staff tie — about 20–25 minutes.

    Chat while you craft

    • What does the word “dream” mean to you — a night dream, or a hope for the future?
    • Who taught you about kindness when you were young?
    • If you could wish one good thing for the people in this room, what would it be?
    • Do you remember hearing about Martin Luther King on the radio or television?
    • What’s one small kindness someone showed you that you’ve never forgotten?
    • Shall we hang your mobile where your family will see it when they visit?
