Oktoberfest activity idea for Aged Care

This is a simple bowling-style activity that looks fantastic once it is set up, but does not take much to run. Residents stay seated and gently roll a soft ball toward nine lightweight pins. You can choose a short floor lane for a more familiar bowling feel, or a tabletop bumper lane when you need the game closer, contained, and easy to reach.

I like using Kegeln for an Oktoberfest session because it has a genuine connection to the celebration. Kegeln is German nine-pin bowling, and historic nine-pin bowling was among the early attractions at Munich Oktoberfest. This is not meant to be a strict recreation of an old bowling alley. It is a safe, seated aged-care version that gives your group a practical Oktoberfest game to enjoy together.

Why Kegeln Belongs at Oktoberfest (Share with Your Residents)

Before we start, here is a little Oktoberfest connection for today’s game. Traditional nine-pin bowling, known in Germany as Kegeln, was one of the early amusements enjoyed at Oktoberfest in Munich. Visitors came for the music, food, rides, and simple games—and bowling was part of the fun.

Our version is a gentle seated take on that old game. There is no need to be competitive: take your turn, give the ball a roll, and enjoy watching the pins fall. If the group likes scoring, we can count the pins together; otherwise, we can simply enjoy the turns and the Oktoberfest atmosphere.

Choose the Version That Suits Your Group

Both versions use the same game: one resident rolls a soft ball and the group watches how many pins fall. The difference is where you build the lane.

VersionChoose it when…Why it is suitable
Seated Floor LaneYou have a clear patch of floor and want the activity to feel most like familiar bowling. The longer roll is easy for the group to follow and gives each turn a clear beginning and end. Residents can remain seated while they play.
Tabletop Bumper LaneYour group is already seated at tables, includes wheelchair users, or benefits from having the equipment close. The ball and pins stay within easy reach. Pool-noodle bumpers contain the ball and fallen pins, which means less chasing equipment around the room.

What You Will Need

ItemWhat to usePractical tip
Nine larger lightweight pinsPlastic toy bowling pins, lightweight plastic bottles, or sturdy paper cups. Aim for pins around 15–20 cm high.Larger, lighter pins are easier to see and reset. Never use glass, metal, or anything heavy.
Soft rolling ballA foam ball, sensory ball, or lightweight rubber ball.Test it first. It should roll without feeling heavy in a resident’s hand.
Painter’s tapeFor start lines, floor-lane edges, and securing tabletop bumpers.Painter’s tape is easy to remove and is less likely to mark surfaces.
Two pool noodlesTabletop version only. Choose straight, undamaged noodles. These become low bumpers along the long sides of the table.
Non-slip shelf liner or matOptional, under the pins.Useful if pins slide too easily before the ball reaches them.
Score sheet and penOptional.Keep score only if it adds to the fun. A turn-taking game works just as well without it.

How to Run the Game

1. Set up before the group arrives

Have the lane, pins, ball, and chairs ready before inviting residents over. Add a small amount of blue-and-white Oktoberfest decoration or play a gentle Oktoberfest playlist if it suits your group. The game itself is the focus; you do not need to turn the room into a stage set.

2. Invite one resident at a time

Ask whether the resident would like a turn. Place the ball in their stronger hand, or rest it on the table or beside the chair so they can pick it up comfortably. Give the same simple instruction each time: “When you are ready, gently roll the ball toward the pins.”

3. Roll, do not throw

The resident should roll the ball with a gentle forward motion. There is no need for speed. On the floor lane, the ball rolls from the chair toward the far pins. On the tabletop lane, it rolls between the pool-noodle bumpers.

4. Count, acknowledge, and reset

Count the fallen pins together if the group enjoys it. Staff reset the pins and return the ball. Two turns per person is usually enough to keep the activity moving and reduce waiting time.

You can name an Oktoberfest Kegeln Champion, play in small teams, or leave out the score entirely. A relaxed turn-taking session is just as successful.

Version 1: Seated Floor Lane Kegeln

The floor lane is the better choice when you have an open, low-traffic area and want the game to look and feel more like bowling.

Staff Setup: Floor Lane

  1. Clear a small floor space. Keep the lane and the area behind the pins clear.
  2. Tape the lane and set the pins. Put two straight tape lines on the floor, then place the nine pins at the far end.
  3. Add the chair. Place a stable chair at the near end of the lane. A wheelchair can be used instead.
  4. Test one roll. Roll the ball once and move the chair or pins closer if needed.

Why the Floor Lane Works Well

The floor lane gives the clearest bowling-style experience. It is a good option for a small group that enjoys watching the ball travel and seeing the pins fall. Because every resident plays from a chair, no one needs to stand or walk down the lane. Staff simply reset the pins and return the ball after each turn.

Version 2: Tabletop Bumper Lane Kegeln

The tabletop version is ideal when you want the game within easy reach. It works particularly well for residents using wheelchairs, residents who are already seated for a morning-tea session, or groups where a floor lane would create too much movement around the room.

Staff Setup: Tabletop Bumper Lane

  1. Set up the table. Use a stable table and seat the resident at the close end. Keep the pin end clear for staff.
  2. Add the bumpers. Tape one pool noodle along each long side of the table, securing each one at both ends and in the middle. The noodles keep the ball and pins on the table.

3. Set the lane. Mark a start line near the resident, then place the nine pins in a diamond at the far end, a little in from the edge.

4. Test one roll. Roll the ball once before the group starts. Move the pins closer or further away until the distance feels right.

Why the Tabletop Version Works Well

The tabletop lane keeps everything close and visible. The pool noodles act as gentle bumpers, so the ball remains on the table and fallen pins are less likely to drop to the floor. It is a practical choice when you have a mixed-ability group, limited floor space, or residents who are more comfortable staying at the table.

Easy Ways to Adapt the Game

If you need to…Try this
Make it easierMove the pins closer or use six pins instead of nine. The tabletop version is usually the easiest place to start.
Support limited arm movementUse the tabletop lane, shorten the distance, and place the ball directly in the resident’s hand.
Support reduced visionUse larger white pins against a darker lane surface and keep the table or floor around the lane free of extra visual clutter.
Run a larger groupUse two teams and add the fallen pins to each team’s total, or give everyone one turn before the second round begins.
Keep it low-pressureSkip scoring and simply make each turn about rolling, watching, and taking part at a comfortable pace.
