Celebrating Bees and Their Importance to Our Planet

As an Activity Coordinator, I always look forward to World Bee Day — it’s a fun and meaningful way to connect our residents with nature and open conversations about the environment, pollination, and food sustainability. It’s also a lovely theme for gentle sensory engagement and crafting!

Bees play such a vital role in our world. Without them, many of our food sources would disappear. World Bee Day is a chance to raise awareness, learn something new, and simply celebrate these little heroes of nature.

🐝 What to Do for World Bee Day in Aged Care

    🌼 Decorate the Space

Brighten up your room with handmade paper bees, sunflowers, and daisies. These can be created in craft groups leading up to the day and used as wall decorations or centrepieces on dining tables.

You might even add some fresh flowers in little jars or display a few bee-themed posters for added cheer.

🌱 Invite a Guest from the Garden Club

Reach out to your local garden club and invite someone in to do a simple flower-potting session. Residents will love getting their hands a little dirty while planting seedlings that attract bees — like lavender, marigolds, or salvias.

It’s also a great chance to learn about pollinator-friendly gardens.

    🍯 Meet a Local Beekeeper

If possible, invite a local beekeeper in for a short talk. These sessions are always fascinating — residents can learn about hive life, honey production, the Queen bee, and what it takes to care for bees.

Some beekeepers can even bring in beeswax products or jars of honey for a little tasting!

    🐝 Install a Bee Hotel

Why not purchase a small bee hotel or insect house to place in your garden or courtyard? This is a wonderful conversation starter and an ongoing project you can revisit through the seasons.

Want to know more about Bee Hotels?
Here’s a great video we found that explains it beautifully. As she shares in the video, bee hotels won’t attract swarms — instead, they provide a safe resting place for solitary bees, the quiet little pollinators that travel alone. 🌼🐝

    📺 Watch a Bee Documentary

Pop on a YouTube video or short documentary about bees. Choose one with clear visuals, gentle narration, and uplifting music — it’s a relaxing way to learn together and can even inspire reminiscing about gardens and nature.

    🧁Serve a Honey-Themed Afternoon Tea

Wrap up your Bee Day celebration with a simple but sweet afternoon tea. Ideas include:

    • Pikelets with honey and cream
    • Crumpets with butter and honey
    • Honey Joys (cornflake crackles)

Serve with tea in pretty cups or set up an outdoor table if the weather allows — a little sunshine always adds to the atmosphere.
